The Challenge
Advertising an electric vehicle in a crowded automotive market demands far more than product specification — it requires the communication of an entirely new relationship between driver, technology, and environment. The Volvo XC40 Recharge sits at the intersection of Scandinavian heritage design, zero-emission innovation, and premium lifestyle aspiration, and each of these dimensions needed to be present without the advertising becoming visually cluttered or messaging becoming diluted. EV consumers are sophisticated: they respond to authenticity, restraint, and values alignment rather than hyperbolic claims. The creative challenge was to produce campaign materials that feel as refined as the vehicle itself — instantly communicating modernity and sustainability without shouting, letting the design do the persuasion.
Our Approach
Kalm Works grounded the campaign in Volvo's own design DNA: the minimalist, purposeful aesthetic that has defined Scandinavian design for decades and that the XC40 Recharge embodies in steel and glass. We stripped the compositions to their essential elements — the vehicle, space, light, and a restrained typographic voice — ensuring that every square centimetre of the layout carried intentional meaning. Rather than illustrating the car's electric powertrain with technical diagrams, we communicated its values through context and atmosphere: natural Scandinavian landscapes and clean urban environments that mirror the XC40 Recharge's environmental promise. The campaign operates on two levels simultaneously — as a premium automotive advertisement and as a manifesto for a more considered, technology-enabled way of living.
